Bike size calculator

Enter your height and, if you can, your inseam, then pick the type of bike. BikeSizeCalc works out the frame size from your inside-leg length, the letter size from your height and a starting saddle height, all in your browser.

Frame, letter size and saddle height

Saved you some time? Leave a tip, entirely optional.

A 5′10″ rider with a 32 in inseam comes out at a 57 cm road frame (size L), an 18.5 in mountain bike (size M) and a 71.8 cm saddle height.

How the bike size calculator works

BikeSizeCalc sizes a frame from your inseam, the inside-leg length from the floor to your crotch. Road and gravel frames are inseam × 0.70 in centimetres, hybrid and city frames inseam × 0.685, and mountain bike frames inseam (cm) × 0.226 in inches. If you leave the inseam blank it is estimated as 46% of your height. The letter size (XS to XXL) comes from your height, because most brands now sell by letter and list a height range for each. Saddle height is inseam × 0.883, measured from the centre of the crank axle to the top of the saddle along the seat tube.

Frame sizes are a starting point. Geometry (stack, reach, top tube length) differs between brands and models, so compare with the maker’s size chart and test ride when you can. Fine-tune fit with saddle height, stem length and handlebar position.

    Frequently asked questions

What size bike do I need for my height?

Roughly: under 5′3″ XS, 5′3″–5′6″ S, 5′6″–5′9″ M, 5′9″–6′0″ L and over 6′0″ XL for road bikes. Inseam gives a more precise frame size.

Is inseam or height better for bike size?

Inseam, because leg length decides standover and saddle height. Height is a good fallback for letter sizes.

What if I am between two sizes?

Pick the smaller frame for a more agile, upright fit, or the larger for a stretched-out, stable fit, and check reach on the maker’s chart.

    Is BikeSizeCalc free?

Yes, with no sign-up or ads, and your numbers stay in your browser.

    Are the results exact?

No. They are a starting point. Frame geometry varies by brand, so check the maker’s size chart and test ride.
